Conservation on the bay
Conservation Northwest, formerly Northwest Ecosystem Alliance, got its start in Bellingham, Washington, in 1989. As the operating center of the organization, we have 13 staff here in our offices facing Bellingham Bay. Westward rises Lummi Island and the San Juan Islands, and to the east, the North Cascades and the volcanic cone of Mount Baker. To the north, one glimpses the Fraser River valley and coastal mountains of British Columbia, Canada, and to the south, the Chuckanuts Mountains and bald eagle haven of the Skagit River valley.
State public lands management is a key local issue for Conservation Northwest . The people (and wildlife) of Bellingham rely for their drinking water on the Lake Whatcom watershed, and we work to protect the public lands forests in the watershed managed by the Department of Natural Resources. We also work to protect the mature forests of Blanchard Mountain in the Chuckanuts, with trails much loved by hikers and horseback riders.
