People are the heart of wilderness and the Columbia Highlands. Today legislators are hearing from the people of the Columbia Highlands about a balanced plan for restoration, sustainable forestry, recreation, and wilderness.
On the afternoon of Friday, August 14, Senator Maria Cantwell and Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, and the Colville National Forest held a listening session on collaborative forestry efforts in Northeast Washington that included panels of experts sharing information and answering questions about forestry, wilderness and recreation in this region.
As part of the session, members of Northeast Washington Forestry Coalition (including Conservation Northwest and The Lands Council, timber industry and business leaders) presented a balanced approach that proposes new wilderness areas, sustainable forest management, and restoration and wildlife protection on the Colville National Forest. This is the first time that such a forum has been held by members of Congress on collaborative forest management in this area.
