By Mitch Friedman, Executive Director

Thirty years ago, I had a vision for a wild and connected Pacific Northwest, which at that time was very much threatened. Vast tracts of majestic old-growth forest were rapidly being cleared. Carnivores like wolves, wolverines, and fishers—key signs of ecological health—were absent from the region. A checkerboard of giant clearcuts along Interstate 90 divided our once-whole mountain ecosystem into the North and South Cascades.

I worried that nothing would change because no one would step up. So we did.

At Conservation Northwest, we’ve strived for more than 30 years to keep the Northwest wild by securing a future for our wildlife and wildlands. Through it all, our members made our work possible.

Together, we’ve protected hundreds of thousands of acres of diverse habitat, from the Douglas fir forests of Blanchard Mountain, where the mountains meet the Salish Sea, to the lodgepole pine lynx habitat of the Loomis State Forest.

We helped reintroduce fishers to Washington and have led wolf recovery here in a direction of coexistence instead of conflict. And have you seen the amazing wildlife overpass spanning I-90 east of Snoqualmie Pass? Yep, that was our idea, and there’s much more to come!

Our successes are creating a wilder future in Washington and southern British Columbia. But to keep making a difference for creatures like wolverines, we need more people to step up. We need you!

Keeping the Northwest wild

Our team is working to save critical sagelands in eastern Washington through collaboration with local communities and the first peoples of these landscapes. Your gift can help us protect our natural heritage and wildlands that are home to greater sage-grouse, pygmy rabbits, and mule deer.

We also continue leading one of the nation’s largest citizen science projects. Our volunteers monitor rare wildlife and restore habitat in the Central Cascades, supporting healthy forests and clean water for downstream communities. Your gift can enable this vital work to continue.

When you give to Conservation Northwest, you join our dedicated conservation community of thousands of members in stepping up for local wildlife and wildlands.

Become a member today and help us keep moving towards a wilder future from the Washington Coast to the British Columbia Rockies!
