Summer has finally hit the Northwest full-force. Let’s celebrate the season by highlighting a few of our favorite hikes on lands you have helped protect. Here are two hikes that are near and dear to our Bellingham staff to give you a firsthand look at some of our great conservation wins.

Blanchard Mountain

Lily and Lizard Lakes

Located in the Blanchard Mountain Natural Resource Conservation Area, this picturesque eight mile hike takes you up through shady woods and along two small lakes. Located half an hour south of Bellingham and just off I-5, this is an easy and beautiful day hike that shows off some of the natural features we campaigned hard to protect in 2006. Here's how to get there.

Lake Whatcom Forest Park Preserve

Lookout Mountain

As one of two mountains protected by the new Lake Whatcom Forest Park Preserve, a  recent victory for us, the community, and our watershed, Lookout Mountain promises to become a local favorite. With two summits only a foot apart in elevation, the new park  makes it easy to escape to the forest and forget you are so close to town.

Directions from Bellingham: Take Lakeway Drive until it turns into Cable Street, continue along until you see Austin Street. Turn right here and continue until the road becomes Lake Louise Road. After about 2.6 miles there should be a yellow gate on the right marking the entrance.

Outside of northwest Washington

If you don’t live in the Bellingham area but still want to get out and enjoy the weather and see the lands your support helps protect, check out our hiking guide for other great hikes throughout Washington!

Do you enjoy natural places like these as much as we do? Help us continue to protect them by supporting our work today.

Just a few reminders…

There are two fee-free days coming up in August, one at Washington State Parks, and one at National Parks!

Our annual fundraising auction in Seattle, Hope for a Wild Future, is coming up in September!
