Super Tuesday

Posted by Barbara Christensen at Tuesday May 13, 2008 03:35 PM |

We continue to cast our votes for grizzly recovery by enjoying some grizz specials in Bellingham! Also, some updates about bear awareness events around the state!

Super Tuesday

Ali and Barbara remember that--just like we might need bigger pants after today's Bear Aware special--bears need room to grow!

Day two of Bear Awareness Week and Ali, and I hit another grizzly hotspot for lunch. This time, we sampled Bob's Burgers and Brew's Grizzly Dip. The servings there are so huge, we had to split one!

Just like our stomachs after this big meal, grizzlies need lots of room. Females usually require 50-300 square miles of range, while males require 200-500 square miles.  Grizzly bears usually have overlapping ranges with several bears sharing an area.

It's a good thing we stored up some energy; after work we head on over to the free Backcountry Bear Awareness program at Backcountry Essentials. I haven't ever had the opportunity to camp in grizzly backcountry, so I have lots to learn, and the Grizzly Bear Outreach Project can give us all some great tips for safe travels. With a little bit of know-how, it's easy for campers, hikers, and other recreationists to hang out where bears roam!

Beyond Bellingham!

We aren't having all the fun here in the 'Ham! Thanks to the Grizzly Bear Outreach Project, all over the state this week you can learn more about grizzly bears. See their site for more information.
