Jackknife Roadless Area on the Colville National Forest

Jackknife Roadless Area. Photo by Eric ZamoraJackknife Roadless Area features some of the most stunning lands in the Colville National Forest. Its focal point, the mighty Jackknife Mountain, is bookended by Alligator Ridge to the south and Thompson Ridge to the east. Old-growth forests of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, Engelmann spruce, and western red cedar highlight this diverse forest habitat.

With five plant species listed as sensitive and two as threatened—the remarkable Yellow lady’s slipper and peculiar moonwort—there is no question that Jackknife is worth protecting. In addition to providing secure habitat for these precious plants, the area includes 7,539 acres of prime wolverine habitat, as well as habitat for Canada lynx, pine marten, and nesting goshawks. Resident herds of mule deer and white-tailed deer in the high mountains and lowland forests make Jackknife excellent habitat for the endangered gray wolf.
