Profanity

Profanity Roadless Area on the Colville National Forest

Profanity Roadless Area. Photo by Tim ColemanProfanity is the largest roadless area in the Colville National Forest at 37,712 acres and features three towering peaks of over 7,000 feet. Rugged forest mountainsides transition into glittering sagebrush and wildflower meadows unique to the Kettle River Range. The majority of Profanity offers the darkest skies available in the continental United States, allowing for the bright stars and moon to light up vistas of the Cascade and Rocky Mountains in the distance.

The habitat of Profanity is on par with the highest quality and most secluded wildlife habitat in the western Colville National Forest. This is why it has more than 31,000 acres of prime wolverine habitat and is also home to Canada lynx, great gray owls, and pine marten. Profanity is the core habitat area for pine marten, a small forest carnivore, on the Kettle Crest. The roadless area also supports a large number of mule deer and a growing number of elk.  Gray wolves have been sighted here several times in recent years.

The deep quiet and solitude along the Kettle Crest Trail, a world-class hiking and equestrian trail, provides an undeniable feeling of isolation from the developed world. It is one of the few roadless areas on the Colville National Forest where a multiday backpacking or horse packing trip is possible without crossing a road.
