It was the bears of the North Cascades which first inspired Chris Morgan, host of Nature's "Bears of the Last Frontier," when he founded the Grizzly Bear Outreach Project. His motto? "What's good for bears is good for people."
Persecuted throughout the 20th century, grizzly bears in the lower 48 were declared endangered in 1975. This animal, which used to roam widely throughout much of the western North America, is today limited to relatively small and isolated populations. Since then, with people's help, grizzlies have had a renaissance in Montana and Yellowstone. Not so, in many other places like Washington, where a long-standing recovery plan has yet to be implemented.
Conservation Northwest is helping recover grizzly bears regionally, by protecting individual bears and critical core and connected habitats and working across borders into British Columbia. How will Cascades grizzly bears survive extinction? What kinds of bridges for grizzlies and grizzly bear habitat will we build? Bears need us now.
