A public process for grizzly bears

Thursday May 15, 2008

The long-stalled recovery plan for the highly endangered North Cascades grizzly bear is finally kick-started into motion.

A youngster at the Arlington Eaglefest writes a letter to help protect grizzly bears in the wilds of the North Cascades. Photo: Rose OliverIn late spring we heard a bit of good news for the rare and highly endangered North Cascades grizzly bear, of which only 20 are thought to remain in the wild. In response to hundreds of letters and phone calls from local citizens, prominent business owners, scientists, and members of local tribes, Congressman Rick Larsen has requested funding to initiate a public process for a grizzly bear recovery plan in the North Cascades. Many thanks to all of you who wrote letters over the last year, and of course a big thank you to Rep. Rick Larsen for his excellent leadership in taking the necessary first step toward saving this amazing icon.
