Voters saw through to the "trick" in I-1033, voting it down soundly and ensuring a better future for children's healthcare and education.

In yesterday's Washington state off-season election, Tim Eyman's latest initiative, I-1033, was rejected by voters 55%-45%. It's Mr. Eyman's  second consecutive landslide defeat. Times are tough, but I-1033 would have made times worse. According to FUSE Washington, "People looked at a future minus more than $8 billion in funding for education, healthcare, and public services and just said No."

We're glad for the results, since the initiative, if passed, would have hurt wildlife and conservation programs throughout the state, especially conservation programs such as the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program, the Trust Land Transfer program, and jobs in natural resource conservation and wildlife management.

The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program is a state grant program that provides funding to protect habitat, preserve working farms, and create new local and state parks. The Trust Land Transfer program enables the state to move sensitive lands out of Department of Natural Resource's revenue-focused trust land program and into a more protective status.

Things are looking better for wildlife and wildlands in Washington thanks also to the dozens of volunteers in Bellingham who phone-banked diligently on this issue, helping voters see through a bad idea to a better future for Washington.
